•A grouping-circular-based algorithm for mesh deformation is originally proposed.•The algorithm approximates the global error with the one of subset.•The algorithm reduces the computational complexity from O(Nc2Nb) to O(Nc3).•The algorithm improves the efficiency of mesh deformation by 9.8 times.
