•SMS image reconstruction hyperparameters need to be tuned for specific experimental setup.•Tikhonov regularization for kernel estimation has a big impact on SMS image reconstruction.•Coil compression using virtual coil approach enables faster SMS image reconstruction and has minimal impact on image quality.•Smaller reconstruction kernels performed better for SMS image reconstruction.
