Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval: Application And Challenges For Indian Languages

In today's digital era, accessing the web contents in the local regional languages is essential for the developing nations. Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval (CLIR) system add more complexity in terms of average precision as a part of the Indian languages compared to English text documents. CLIR refers to the retrieving data where the query and/or documents are in different languages. The poor performance is due to variation in term and ambiguity in lexical resources. This paper presents the challenges, issues that come along the way when developing CLIR applications which can be used for improving access ratio in local/regional languages and reviews some of the recent research methods in domain of cross lingual retrieval with current innovative directions.
