An experimental study of tongue body loops in V1-V2-V1 sequences

•Tongue body trajectories in V1-V2-V1 sequences form loops.•Loop shape varies systematically with angle of main movement line between V1 and V2.•Biomechanics suffice to generally explain loops and angle-dependence of their shape.•Macroscopic model of loop generation is proposed.
