Statistical characterization of sedimentation velocity of natural particles

•Sedimentation velocity and drag coefficient are characterized in statistical terms.•Well-known sedimentation velocity laws are discussed in light of collected data.•Two well-established drag laws are fit to the dataset with nonlinear regression.•Copula-based regression is performed to provide the trend of high order statistics.
