Metabolomic indicators for low-light stress in seagrass

•Strong signals of stress response revealed in metabolomics with Zostera muelleri.•Metabolite indicators of low-light stress are consistent with reduced photosynthesis and carbon fixation.•N-methylnicotinamide was sensitive to low-light stress.•Metabolomics shows a more consistent response to low-light than traditional methods like biomass change.
