•Central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is important in neonatal care.•Environmental surveillance cultures revealed the sites near infant had more bacteria.•Routine scrubbing means scrubbing twice daily the sites found more bacteria.•Routine scrubbing reduced CLABSI significantly.
