•Isofuranodiene induces a transition from a cubic to a reverse hexagonal phase.•Isofuranodiene enter in the hydrophobic compartment of the matrix.•Encapsulated isofuranodiene has a higher anticancer activity in breast cancer cells.•A synergic effect between isofuranodiene and glyceryl monooleate is observed.
