•An algorithm for colon segmentation in T2-MRI acquired from the unprepared colon.•Multigrid techniques are used to support large resolution MRI datasets.•A novel probabilistic tubularity filter, applicable to generalized tubular structures.•Algorithms for coarse detection of colon neighboring areas and the colon medial path.•The experiments validate its suitability for clinical use.
