Deep Learning for fractographic classification in metallic materials

•We developed an expert system to classify among failure modes on two different datasets.•We used traditional deep learning methods and compared our work with different state-of-the-art architectures.•We modified the state-of-the-art architecture named DAWN to better address the problem of fracture classification.•The study was designed to support failure analysis and as a base for future systems.
