•There are many barriers to initiating medication for addiction treatment (MAT).•Same- and next-day access to MAT is associated with increased odds of arrival to appointments for addiction treatment.•Clinics should strive to mitigate barriers to accessing MAT by reducing wait-times for patients seeking treatment.
