Citrus reticulata peel oil as an antiatherogenic agent: Hypolipogenic effect in hepatic cells, lipid storage decrease in foam cells, and prevention of LDL oxidation

•Citrus reticulata peel oil induces a hypolipogenic effect on HepG2 hepatic cells.•C. reticulata peel oil decreases cholesterol synthesis by inhibition of a post-squalene reaction.•Docking simulations proposed that C. reticulata peel oil compounds may be lanosterol synthase inhibitors.•C. reticulata peel oil decreases lipid content in RAW 264.7 foam cells and LDL lipid peroxidation.
