Estimation of Rice Fresh Biomass Using ALOS Images

Accurate estimation of rice biomass and yield estimation are not only important for rice cropping management, but also for quantitative understanding of carbon cycle in agricultural ecosystems. In this study, the fresh biomass is estimated by using broadband indices from multispectral sensor AVNIR-2 on board ALOS platform. A field campaign was carried out during June 2010 in northern part of Iran and fresh biomass was measured. To assess the performance of indices, RMSE and R between fresh and measured biomass were calculated. Results demonstrate that only three out of the seven vegetation indices, including the PVI, DVI, MSAVI, are in a reasonably good linear relationship with fresh biomass (R= 0.73)
