Aerosols affect the atmosphere through the aerosolradiation and the aerosol-clouds interactions. In this paper we report in detail on two feedbacks whereby the radiative effect of dust on surface radiative fluxes acts to decrease 5 or increase the dust loading of the atmosphere via modification of boundary-layer stability, thereby acting to modify the radiative aerosol effect. These feedbacks between dust and boundary layer stability occurred during a series of dust storms in the Sahara and the Eastern Mediterranean in April 1
