•Abdominal adhesions (AA) can lead to long-term surgical complications.•Compound 21 (C21) is an anti-fibrotic angiotensin II type 2 receptor agonist.•C21 reduces intraperitoneal TGF- β and AA formation in mice.•C21 reduces mesothelial cell and peritoneal fibroblast migration, pSMAD2/3 expression.•Laparotomy wound healing is not compromised by C21.
