Network virtualization, network functions virtualization, experimental switching and routing protocols, and many other applications rely on software switches. In the wake of these demands, industry and research efforts now develop a multitude of switches, eg Open vSwitch, FD. io VPP, BESS, Lagopus, Open Contrail, and Linux Kernel routing.
