•Phenolic compounds were extracted and purified from Thymus algeriensis.•T. algeriensis showed in vitro and in vivo antioxidant effects.•T. algeriensis purified extracts presented antibacterial effect against 5 bacterial strains.•Antibacterial properties were attributed to rosmarinic acid, kaempferol and eriodictyol derivatives.
