Trauma patients returning to the emergency department after discharge

•Re-presentation rates of trauma patients to emergency department are significant.•Only a fraction of trauma patients who return to ED after discharge require re-admission.•Patients with government insurance are more likely to return to ED than others.•Wound care issues and pain control are two potentially modifiable reasons for return to ED.•Improved discharge planning and telehealth could be used to potentially decrease reliance on ED.
