Breeding A Landrace of Capsicum Pepper in Yeongyang, 'subicho', for Resistance to Phytophthora Capsici

'Subicho' is a pepper landrace adapted to the Subi area in Yeongyang county, Gyeongbuk province, Korea. Resistance to Phytophthora capsici and tolerance to viral complex in the field were introduced into 'Subicho' from PI201234 and KC406, respectively, in the last 20 years by backcross breeding. The breeding line PVR Subi was again crossed to a new version of 'Subicho' ('New Subi') with fruits bigger than the original 'Subicho' and to a good-colored KC1522 accession in 2009. F-5 lines of the two crosses were evaluated for resistance to P. capsici and horticultural characteristics, capsaicinoids, sugar content and ASTA color values. The selections surviving P. capsici infection showed a similar level of resistance to resistant commercial hybrid cultivars. An F-5 line derived from the 'New Subi' cross had higher capsaicinoids contents but a lower color value than the KC1522 cross. Lines derived from the KC1522 cross had higher sugar contents than commercial hybrid cultivars.
