•Acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) prevents dental erosion.•Even after severe erosion attacks, acid-resistant proteins remain in the AEP.•Rinsing with CaneCPI-5, HB or StN15 increases acid-resistant proteins in the AEP.•Rinsing with CaneCPI-5, HB or StN15 reduces erosive demineralization in vivo.
