•Wheatgrass of four wheat varieties grown using different conditions was investigated.•Mineral, ash, protein, amino acid and phenolic contents varied with grown conditions.•C-306 grown using cocopeat with nutrient solution had abundant essential amino acids.•HD-3086 grown using soil exhibited the highest antioxidant properties.•Phenolic acids and flavonoids were predominant phenolic compounds in wheatgrass.
