•Two models to estimate the ratio of stemflow (SF) to gross rainfall (GR) in Japanese cedar and cypress plantations were developed using common forest inventory data.•Stand density (SD) exclusively determined the SF/GR.•A density-based SF/GR model with SD was developed for forest water management.•Stand-scale funneling ratio is related to mean diameter at breast height (DBH¯).•A size-based SF/GR model with DBH¯ and SD enables meticulous forest water management.
