•Animal studies suggested the association of FGF21 and SGLT2. FGF21 may also be a therapeutic trigger for SGLT2 inhibitors.•The study was the first to investigate the association of serum FGF21 levels and urinary glucose excretion (UGE) in T2DM patients.•The association of high FGF21 and low UGE suggested that FGF21 might be associated with glucose reabsorbing in kidney.
