•The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on medical education.•COVID-19 has forced rapid changes in the Peruvian Residency Training Program.•More than half of the residents considered that the loss of surgical training opportunities would negatively affect their job performance.•In Peru, as of 03/16/2020, no residents had performed more than 25 laparoscopic procedures or trauma or elective surgeries.
