•Electron beam welding-brazing butt joint of 304 stainless steel to CP-Al with a AlSi5 filler wire is obtained.•Microstructural evolutions and mechanical properties of dissimilar metal welds were investigated.•Si segregation during the liquid aluminum-solid steel interaction made the IMC layer become Al8Fe2Si.
