•A novel PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 nanohybrid was synthesized.•The interfacial adhension between PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrids and epoxy was improved.•PDA-BN@f-Al2O3 hybrids enhanced the corrosion protection of the epoxy coating.
