Bioactive polyphenols from Ranunculus macrophyllus Desf. Roots: Quantification, identification and antioxidant activity

•Ranunculus macrophyllus roots are used in the Algerian folk medicine to treat feminine infertility•Ethyl acetate contained most of the polyphenols of Ranunculus macrophyllus roots.•The antioxidant activity of the polyphenol rich fraction was similar or better than synthetic and natural standard antioxidants.•The antioxidant activity was highly correlated with the polyphenols content.•Gallic acid, dihydroxybenzoic acid, Hesperidin and resveratrol are the main compounds in the ethyl acetate fraction.
