•Each kingdom has apparently developed its specific UPRmt regulators.•However, UPRmt activation induces nuclear gene expression of many similar genes.•Strategies to resolve mitochondrial dysfunctions are thus partially conserved.•We identified conserved genes across kingdoms as candidates for future research.
