Cooldown of insulated metals in saturated and subcooled liquid nitrogen

•A first of a kind exploration of pool boiling of insulated metals in sub-cooled liquid nitrogen.•New observation that heat transfer coefficient in the nucleate regime of coated metals is constant unlike bare metals.•Outline of phenomenological model to predict the coating thickness for a close to optimum fast cool down time.
