One-step MOF assisted synthesis of SmVO4 nanorods for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light

•SmVO4 nanorods was produced in a single step by MOF assisted synthesis using 2- methylimidazole as linker.•Hydroxyl radicals and holes generation from particle surface played vital role on photocatalysis.•The narrowed bandgap of SmVO4 nanorods extends photoresponse to visible light region.•As synthesized SmVO4 nanorods were suitable to be used as visible light photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.
