On the theoretical and phase field modeling of the stress state associated with ferroelastic twin nucleation and propagation near crack tip

•Several fundamental solutions are derived based on Eshelby inclusion theory.•The shielding effect to the crack tip is dependent on the size of the switched wake.•The best toughening formula of a ferroelastic ceramic can be obtained by decreasing the interface energy of twin boundary and increasing the spontaneous strain.
