•A novel anxious arousal implicit association task (IAT) was developed.•Anxiety sensitivity was unrelated to performance on the anxious arousal IAT.•Anxiety sensitivity predicted neural arousal during the anxious arousal IAT.•IAT scores predicted neural markers of attention during the anxious arousal IAT.
