Glaucoma: Management and Future Perspectives for Nanotechnology-Based Treatment Modalities

•Glaucoma is asymptomatic ocular disease until late stage which makes it a worldwide cause of irreversible vision loss.•There are two main approaches for managing glaucoma, the drugs-based approach and the surgical-based one.•Topical site-specific drug delivery systems started to find their way to the market since 2013 to overcome the limited availability of drugs from the conventional delivery systems.•Nanotechnology-based delivery systems, being the optimum solution for the limited corneal permeability based on extensive researches in this area, represent the next era in the site-specific delivery products for drugs managing glaucoma.•The main obstacle towards commercialization of nano-tech-based systems is the lack of guidelines from the drug regulatory authority for such delivery systems which might enthusiasm the manufacturer to fill the gabs to be able to send products to the markets.
