Hybrid collaborative filtering methods for recommending search terms to clinicians

•Searching for the same or similar information on similar patients is inefficient.•Recommending search terms automatically could help alleviate this problem.•We use previous searches and patient encounters to recommend search terms.•Our new models outperform all current methods for top-N search term recommendation.•Recommender systems could make information retrieval more efficient and effective.
