•Following short-term PRR activation the supernatants of DCs induce TNF-dependent apoptosis.•Dendritic cell supernatant activates both RIPK1-dependent and -independent apoptosis.•Tolerogenic conditions reduce the cytotoxic capacity of short-term activated dendritic cells.
