Long-term gear life prediction based on ordered neurons LSTM neural networks

•A new gear RUL prediction model based on ON-LSTM is proposed.•The physical explanation of ON-LSTM is firstly achieved.•The frequency center index is found to be suitable for the gear health index.•This method has better long-term prediction ability than other traditional methods.•This method can implement RUL prediction in the case of small samples.
