Coupling between clay swelling/collapse and cationic partition

•Na+/K+ partition through clay responses to aqueous activity condition.•K+ ions are enriched in montmorillanite under all studied circumstances.•A low water activity strengthens K+ ion enrichment in montmorillanite.•Clay swelling/collapse is quantitatively coupled to cationic partition.
