Optimal expansion paths for hospitals of different types: Viewpoint of scope economies and evidence from Chinese hospitals

•We identify eight paths for Chinese hospitals to expand, along which economies of scope exist.•Returns to scope do not have a consistent trend for different methods of expansion.•Adding the same department to different types of hospitals has different effects on economies of scope.•Completely general hospitals are more efficient than those lacking one department.
