•Cattle selected nutrient-rich vegetation on heterogeneous semi-natural pastures.•Urination and defaecation (fouling) also took place on the nutrient rich vegetation.•Nutrient transport between vegetation types does not seem to be a major problem.•More in depth research is needed to verify these results.
