High resilience, but low viability, of pine plantations in the face of a shift towards a drier climate

•Radial-growth data allow identifying plantations vulnerable to drought.•Dense pine plantations are less resistant to droughts and more prone to die.•Low resistance to drought is related to tree dieback.•The viability of similar drought-prone pine plantations will be under risk.
