Development of a Visualization System for Neutral Plant 3D CAD Models in Piping and Equipment Disciplines

Plant 3D CAD systems are mainly used for detail design in the process plant industry. Plant 3D CAD models consists of 3D design and spec-catalog information. Many organizations participate in the lifecycle of a process plant and collaborate with each other. Therefore, it is important to share 3D CAD models among participating organizations. As a solution for this, the use of a neutral model is a typical approach. In this regard, a visualization system is necessary to validate neutral plant 3D CAD models that are converted from native ones. To accomplish this, we analyze functional requirements of a visualization system, conduct the basic design of the system, and develop a protype system according to the system design. Finally, experiments of visualizing neutral plant 3D CAD models are performed to verify the prototype system.
