•An intelligent diagnosis method is presented for rolling bearings fault diagnosis.•The optimized variational modal decomposition can improve the decomposition ability.•The proposed method can improve the accuracy of bearing fault diagnosis.•Experimental results verify the validity and superiority of the proposed method.
