•We investigated the Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effect (BFLPE) on achievement emotions.•Higher class-average math performance has a negative effect (i.e., BFLPE) on pride.•BFLPE influenced pride and shame of lower-performing adolescents.•BFLPE influenced enjoyment and boredom of higher-performing adolescents.•BFLPE affected males’ shame.
