•The non-fundamental modes of the diffusion equation are computed.•The augmented block Householder Arnoldi (ABHA) method is used.•The ABHA method is compared to the Holelling deflation and to the Krylov–Schur method in SLEPc.•Numerical results are presented for a series of Cartesian and hexagonal 3D benchma rks.
