Triadic balance in the brain: Seeking brain evidence for Heider's structural balance theory.

•We found novel brain evidence in support of both Heider’s and Simmel’s theory.•Brain regions of cognitive and sentimental dissonance is related to triadic imbalance.•Brain mentalization becomes more complex in a triad than a triple.•People are slightly more likely to choose balanced than unbalanced triads.
