Switching off for future—Cost estimate and a simple approach to improving the ecological footprint of radiological departments

•Radiology departments have high potential to improve their ecological footprint.•Switching off workstations after core working hours can considerably reduce energy consumption and costs.•Encouraging manual shutdown/restart is effective, but costs valuable working time and results vary with user adherence.•Energy-saving plans with automated shutdown/restart and standby modes may be most efficient ecologically and economically.
