•Two-electron redox reactions can be realized in 3D porous PTMA/rGO electrode.•PTMA/rGO delivers 153 mA h g−1 at 20 mA g−1 and high utilization efficiency.•High capacity retention of 96.9% after 100 cycles at 0.1C has achieved.
