•We report a case in which a tumor was found incidentally in hepatic segment 6.•The submandibular gland was resected five years ago for adenoid cystic carcinoma.•Postoperative pathological diagnosis was metastasis from the previous carcinoma.•Liver resection may be useful for liver metastasis of submandibular gland carcinoma.
