•LVEF, TAPSE, SVI, and PAT are predictors of mortality in patients with COVID-19.•Very limited focused echocardiography is sufficient to stratify mortality risk.•LUS is useful for risk prediction of mechanical ventilation but not mortality.•Point-of-care ultrasound training may benefit physicians treating COVID-19 patients.
