Abstract
•Two freeways with ASCS deployed on corresponding alternate routes were analyzed.•Fixed and random-parameter logistic regression models were used in the analyses.•ASCS reduced secondary crash likelihood for 84% of crashes in one freeway.•ASCS are recommended for alternate routes to help reduce freeway secondary crashes.
